ABSTRACT

Introduction: In Colombia, 7,000 people, in average, die every year from traffic accidents and others are seriously injured, with more than 30,000 injured in 2018. These figures reflect a public health problem, which makes it necessary to generate an awareness process to achieve change in attitude in all road actors, as well as increasing people's knowledge regarding mobilization and traffic signs. Objective: To determine the impact of an educational program on road knowledge in the adoption of safe attitudes towards traffic and mobility in schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years from Barranquilla, Colombia. Materials and methods: This research is structured in a pre-test and post-test design with a comparison group with measurements through two scales: a scale of students' attitudes in relation to road safety, and a second instrument that assesses knowledge regarding traffic regulations and mobility. Results: It was found that there are significant differences between the children who had the educational experience in relation to traffic rules and signs. Conclusions: Road safety education is shown as a positive strategy in the formation of safe attitudes in relation to traffic and mobility regulations.

ABSTRACT

1 a máx. 7 puntos) y la satisfacción (mín. 1 a máx. 7 puntos).

Objective: to compare the assessment and satisfaction by participants for the debriefing provided by peers vs. the one conducted by instructors in a high fidelity clinical simulation at a post-graduate Nursing course on Out-of-Hospital Emergencies. Method: a quasi-experimental study conducted in 2019 at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid). The population consisted in nurses who had been enrolled for the first time. They were assigned to a control arm (debriefing provided by experienced instructors – CA) or an intervention arm (provided by peers who received a 2-hour training on debriefing – IA). After each simulation (four in total) debriefings were assessed through the EDSS© questionnaire (29 items from 1 to 7 scores), and satisfaction (from 1 to 7 scores). Descriptive statistics was conducted as well as comparison for the overall results of the four sessions in both arms. Results: all the 30 persons enrolled participated in the study. The evaluation with the EDSS© questionnaire was similar in both arms, except in the ability of the facilitator to establish a stimulating learning environment (CA = 6.61; IA = 6.23; p= 0.019) and in the level of knowledge of the facilitator and how they used it to help the participants to improve their future performance (CA = 6.74; IA = 6.33; p= 0.003). Overall satisfaction was similar in both arms (CA = 6.63; IA = 6.55; p= 0.374). Conclusions: debriefing facilitated by a peer represents an alternative to traditional debriefing in post-graduate nurse training, based on the evaluation results of participants and their satisfaction; however, other aspects should also be assessed.(AU)

ABSTRACT

(AU)

We performed a prospective, longitudinal and quasi experimental study at family outpatient clinic 19, October 10th Popular Council, Ranchuelo, Villa Clara, Cuba, from February 2013 through February 2014. The aim of the present study was to establish the effect of homeopathic medication for treatment of asthma among adults along 1 year. Patients received a combination of Kalium nitricum 200cH and Arsenicum album 200cH. Statistical analysis involved non-parametric tests. At the end of follow-up the number of asthma attacks decreased among the patients who took the medication continuously. At baseline, patients were distributed across all 4 severity groups; the degree of severity decreased among all the participants who adhered to treatment. Use of homeopathy as adjuvant to conventional treatment should be promoted. (AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of an intermediate care model based on a system of care focused on integrated care pathways compared to the traditional model of geriatric care (usual care) in Catalonia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The design is a quasi-experimental pre-post non-randomised study with non-synchronous control group. The intervention consists of the development and implementation of integrated care pathways and the creation of specialised interdisciplinary teams in each of the processes. The two groups will be compared for demographic, clinical variables on admission and discharge, geriatric syndromes, and use of resources. DISCUSSION: This quasi-experimental study, aims to assess the clinical impact of the transformation of a traditional model of geriatric care to an intermediate care model in an integrated healthcare organisation. It is believed that the results of this study may be useful for future randomised controlled studies.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To assess the health related quality of life (HRQOL) and associated factors of patients before, and one year after, total knee (TKA) and hip (THA) arthroplasty. METHODS: A quasi-experimental prospective study conducted in hospitals with different levels of complexity and volume in Catalonia, and on patients with an indication of a TKA or THA. Demographic and psychosocial variables were recorded, and the SF-36 and WOMAC, and a question on perception of change after surgery were administered to patients by telephone interview. The standardised differences (effect size) of perceived change using the SF-36 and WOMAC scores before and after surgery were calculated. The factors associated with HRQOL one year after surgery were analysed using adjusted general linear models. RESULTS: Although there was an overall improvement in most HRQOL domains of patients (n=672), 9% saw little improvement after surgery, with their scores at baseline and follow-up being very similar (small size effect: 0.0-0.4). Women, patients with low social support, with lower scores (worse) in perceived mental health and baseline HRQOL, and who declared that their condition was more severe, perceived a poorer HRQOL one year after surgery (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Factors associated to a worse prognosis one year after an arthroplasty have been identified and are consistent with other published studies. The assessment of HRQOL can be a key instrument for identifying possible patients without improvement, in order to assess alternatives to an intervention, or apply other interventions in order to improve the efficiency of the healthcare process.
